Yolande Marie Ethier

ETHIER, Yolande Marie
November 20, 1933 – January 24, 2015

Yolande passed away peacefully with her children at her side. Beloved mother of Dan (Carolyn) Ethier and Jim (Barb) Ethier; her grandchildren Kurtis Ethier, Krystina (Corey) Repchuk, Ben (Laura) Ethier, and Sarah Ethier; three great-grandchildren and many other relatives; Yolande was predeceased by Emil, her husband of 61 years, in 2013.

Meme was a sweet, loving mother and grandmother. She lived her life for her husband and her family, always putting their needs before her own, making innumerable precious memories in the process. She was a typical grandma with a wrinkled face and twinkle in her eye. But she was also an over-the-top grandma who would take on any challenge with her grandkids, from cooking, baking, and crafting together to teaching her teenaged granddaughter to drive.

Yolande was a talented artist. She was a self-taught painter of flowers, wildlife, landscapes, and portraits. From feathers to fence boards, maple leaves to tractor seats . . . anything could be her canvas. Her creativity was boundless, and she could find expression in any material: pine needle baskets, wood carving, silversmithing, and flower arranging. She would patiently work at her projects, learning the intricate details of threadwork, Brazilian embroidery, crocheting, sewing, porcelain doll painting, and calligraphy.

Meme had an eye for beauty in nature. She delighted in her flowers, especially her rose garden, and she loved camping. A highlight of her retirement years with Emil was their extensive trailering for 19 years, forming lasting friendships throughout Canada and the United States. She loved to laugh and looked for ways to make others smile, with gentle teasing, playing Santa’s elf, and even becoming a professional clown alongside Emil.

We were enriched by her presence; we are diminished by her passing.

At her request, Yolande will be interred at a private family service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta, High Park Corner, 14925 – 111 Avenue NW, Edmonton Alberta T5M 2P6.

At the family’s request, flowers will be gratefully declined.
