William Gillis Roy Johanneson, long-time resident of Drayton Valley passed away at Kipnes Centre for Veterans on the evening of Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at the age of 98 years. Bill, along with the love of his life, Phyl, made Drayton Valley their home from 1958 to 2017and have resided at Kipnes Centre for Veterans, Edmonton for the past year and a half. Bill made many sacrifices, but most substantial was his engagement in WWII, doing his part, along with many others, to bring Canadians the freedoms we have today. During his many years in Drayton Valley, it brought Bill great pleasure to be as involved as he possibly could in his community and surrounding areas, giving up much of his time to ensure the enrichment of his home town. Bill was a Manager for the Town of Drayton Valley; a Justice of the Peace; served many years on the Drayton Valley Hospital Board; was very much engaged in the Historical Society; was a committed and connected member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #269; and as an Air Cadet Commander, Bill put aside one week of his holidays every year to partake in Cadet Camp in Penhold. Among the countless life experiences, Bill’s greatest commitment, passion and love was that of his family. Bill’s unwavering love and dedication will be greatly missed by his wife and best friend of 73 years, Phyllis; children, Brenda (Ernie) Vandenbiggelar; Aileen (Doug) Proctor, Derrik Johanneson and daughter-in-law, Christine Johanneson; grandchildren, Carianne (Rob) Filipelli, Deanna (Sean) Rafferty, Denise Rogers, Craig (Lisa) Vandenbiggelaar, Jay (Deanne) Johanneson, Joy (Kevin) Sully and Amanda (Paul) Slaught; 18 great-grandchildren and many extended family and friends. Bill is predeceased by two sons, Robin and Barry Johanneson; parents, Gillis and Florence Johanneson; brother, George (Jeanne) Johanneson; sister, Rose (Al) Taylor; nephews, Jimmy and Brian Johanneson and cousin Alvin Johanneson. Warmest appreciation is passed on to the incredible staff at Kipnes Centre for Veterans for the excellent care provided in the past 1 ½ years. A Memorial Service will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #269, 5204 51 Avenue, Drayton Valley on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions in Bill’s name may be made directly to Royal Canadian Legion Branch #269 or to Kipnes Centre for Veterans.

Dad, thank you for being my mentor, my guidance through life, the man who gave so much love to me, Ernie, our entire family. You were like a father to Ernie, especially after his Dad passed and he knew you thought of him as a son. We miss seeing you every day when we are with Mom, but we feel blessed to have had your constant loving care for the number of years we did. We love and remember you forever.

I had the absolute privilege of working with ‘Mr. Johanneson’ in the DV Town Office many years ago. A wonderful gentleman and I met his wonderful wife Phyllis.
Even after retirement they kept in touch with us in DV and I truly am honored to have had their kindness in our lives.
My condolences to the entire family. ❤
