WALSH, Joseph

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Joe in his 96th year after a brief illness. His gentle soul will now touch the gracious hand of God.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 67 years, Margo; seven children: Kathy (Chaldeans Mensah), JoAnn (Dave) Morrissey, Pat (Klaas) Rodenburg, Teresa, Mary K (Geoff) Cuskelly, Tim (Kay), and Barb (John Morley); seven grandchildren: Brad Morrissey (Jessica Pink), Brent Morrissey, Norma Rodenburg (Mike Chow), Elliott Rodenburg (Eboni), Melissa Rodenburg (Graeme Mellway), Lachlan Cuskelly, and Ella Cuskelly; three great-grandchildren: Edward Pink, Madeline and Elizabeth Chow; sisters-in-law: Helen Trudel and Joan Pourbaix; and numerous nieces and nephews scattered across Canada. He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Ellen, and siblings: sisters Margaret, Anne, Helen, Teresa, Mary and brothers Francis and Richard.

Beloved son of Frank Walsh and Ellen Fraser, Joe was born on a farm in Peterborough, Ontario. As a young man, he made his way out west to Edmonton, where he met Margo MacRae at a church function. After marrying in 1953, Joe and Margo raised a family of 7 children.  A man of quiet and abiding faith, Joe was a devout Catholic and rarely missed a Sunday Mass service. He was known for his dry humour, sharp mind, and quick wit, which he kept right up until the end.  Joe enjoyed a long career in the oil and gas business, spending many years in Ft. St. John, BC, then Edmonton, with Oilwell (USS Steel). After his retirement he devoted more time to volunteering at St. Andrew’s Parish. You could find him ushering, taking in the collection, or helping out at the Food Bank. One of Joe’s favorite past times was his garden, and he delighted in sharing his bounty of vegetables and flowers with friends and neighbors.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at 1:00 pm at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, 12810 111 Ave NW. Private interment will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edmonton Food Bank or a charity of one’s choice.
