It is with great sadness that the family of Vera Pyrcz announces her passing in her 101st year.
Vera will be lovingly remembered by her sisters, Emily Sharko and Alexandra (Don) Fraser and her many nieces and nephews, and their children. She was predeceased by her brothers Alexander, Cyril, Teofan and Michael and by her sisters Olive and Anna. Her parents were John and Mary Pyrcz.
Vera grew up on the family farm, located in the Sprucedale area West of Nisku. It was in Leduc and Edmonton where she took piano lessons, notably under Mrs. Greenberg and Mme LeSaunier before obtaining her piano teacher’s certification, as a member of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto in 1936. She taught many adult students and children, including her sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews. Continuing her love of music, she also worked in the sheet music department of National Music Store in Edmonton for well over a decade.
Vera became an avid walker and lover of the outdoors long before it became fashionable. For many years she spent summers in Banff helping her brother, Teofan, in the Banff Gem Shop. There, she developed her love of mountain trekking and eventually took up cross country skiing. She was a member of the Edmonton Trekker’s Club. She lived in McKernan area on the Southside for many years.
A funeral service will take place at St. Mary’s Russian Orthodox Church in Nisku, Alberta on Monday, February 15th, 2016 at 10 am with the Very Reverand Igor Kisil officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Donations in lieu of flowers to a charity of your choice.
