It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother and Nana, Doreen. She was predeceased by John, her loving husband and soul mate of 62 years. Doreen is survived by her children; Bryan (Leslie), Jane (Jim), Jill (Doug), and Alan (Dawn). Her grandchildren; Scott, Laura (Conor), David, Anne Catherine (George), Becca (David), John, Patrick (Taryn), Erinn, and James. She was the only child of Fredrick and Lily Porter and was born and grew up in Calgary. Her family holidays were spent at Sylvan Lake. Summers at Sylvan were very special and resonated of happy times. Doreen and John met at the University of Alberta while he was studying medicine and she was pursuing her science degree in Home Economics. Mom often said, “there was no one else after she met her “Johnny”. They were devoted parents and worked tirelessly to raise their family and to provide many opportunities for their children and grandchildren.
Doreen was one never to stay idle and as the children grew and her day to day involvement became less with them, mom directed her efforts in assisting John with his business affairs. She was instrumental in their management which allowed John to direct more time to his medical career and outdoor activities. John, on many occasions, stated that he and our mom worked as a team and that he would never have had the success he had without her support.
Doreen developed many life long friendships that started as a young girl and continued to the end. These ladies supported one another emotionally throughout their lives. They included the Spa Girls, Bridge Group & Mayfair Gang.
Over the years Doreen and John travelled to many places in the world, enjoyed their condo in Maui, and cottage time with the family. “Mom” and “Nana” will always be most remembered and adored for her loyalty, generosity and supportive nature. The Mason family extends a sincere thank you to Myra Colanggo and Doris Robles for their friendship and loving care to Doreen during her latter years.
A Celebration of Life will be held at St. George’s Anglican Church, 11737-87 Avenue on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at 1:30 pm with a reception to follow at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club, 9450 Groat Road. Parking passes are available at the church.
