Thomas, Dorcas (Dee) Kathlyn

Dorcas (Dee) Kathlyn Thomas née Small

Born May 13, 1938 in DeBruiel St. Lucia
to Lucinda Maud Small (née Grainger) and Josephus Henry Small
Died July 30, 2020 in Edmonton, Alberta.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our dear mother at the age of 82. She passed away surrounded by her family and will be fondly remembered by children Valda, Christine, Earl, grandchildren Ayan, Lucia, Jada, siblings Haynes, Adina, Ruth, Wilma, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also mourning her loss are a multitude of friends who knew her lovingly as Auntie Dee or Grandma.

Dee Thomas moved from Saint Lucia to England around 1961. She met her husband in Birmingham, married in 1963, and went on to have three children. They emigrated to Canada in 1970 when the youngest was 6 months old and settled in Peterborough Ontario. In 1977 the family relocated again to Alberta and settled in Lethbridge, a city she loved dearly. She spent 26 years in Lethbridge before finally moving to Edmonton and living with her oldest daughter Valda in 2013.

She cared deeply for the communities that she lived in welcoming into her home people from her church family, students, and immigrants providing refuge and retreat. She loved hosting large dinners for Sabbath and holidays, showers for friends, and sharing her knowledge of delicious and healthy cuisine with all. She also volunteered with her local church community center and helped people navigate immigration, social, and family services. She was a model of servant leadership always demonstrating her love of God and others in her daily life.

A viewing and funeral service will be held on August 9th at Christ the Way Seventh Day Adventist Church (South Pointe Community Centre 11520 Ellerslie Rd SW Edmonton, AB T6W 1A2). Viewing will start 1:45 and service at 2:30 PM (MDT).

Dear Valda, Christine, Earl and Family,
We are so saddened to hear of your mom’s passing. What a beautiful soul she was, she was such a dear friend to my grandma and the two of them always were a true example of angels here on earth. Your mom was such a fighter and always remained such a positive and bright light in the world. I feel so blessed to have known her so well. You all are in our thoughts and prayers and pray each memory you hold so close of your mom and grandma bring peace and comfort to your hearts.
With love,
Danna, Stan, Madison and Nicholas Matotek
