Theodore Michael Gates

It is with much sadness and love; the family announces the passing of Theodore Michael Gates on January 5, 2017 at the age of 83.

His wife of 59 years Patricia Ann Gates and his bother Jerry Gaetz, sister Elinor Cole as well as sons Bill (wife Patti McGhee and grand daughters Natalie and Laura) and James Gates (wife Elizabeth Quinn) lovingly remember Michael.

Michael was born June 10, 1933 in Sudbury, Ontario to Theodore and Elinor Gaetz. He graduated from Ryerson Polytechnic in 1956.

Mike, as he was known by his brothers, was active in the Masonic Fraternity in Edmonton, where he developed many important relationships and made a significant contribution.  He was the Worshipful Master of Empire Lodge in 1981 and 1982.  He led District #20 with distinction during his 1984-85 term as District Deputy Grand Master.  He was recognized for 50 years of membership and service to Freemasonry on January 4th, 2015.

Michael was a well-respected community member in Edmonton contributing many volunteer hours in Gold Bar and Horizon Village South.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the team of practitioners and care givers at Grandview Capital Care who provided such compassion and support.

As per Michael’s wish, there will be no funeral, however the family will organize a celebration of Michael’s life later in 2017.

Mike was a very special friend and fraternal brother.
I succeeded him as the District Deputy Grand Master
in 1985, and we have maintained a bond of friendship
and mutual respect ever since. He has left his mark in
our fraternity and will be ever remembered. My condolences to his wife Pat and family.

Michael was an older brother of Elinor. From grade 2 until the present Elinor has been a best friend for me. In my youth I was often at the Gaetz home where I would see Michael from time to time. I would also see him at the high school, around town, and on the football field fighting for Copper Cliff High. I really never new Michael but he was my friend’s big brother and I looked up to him.

Life goes by so quickly and then I start losing friends and aquaintances. I am sorry I did not ever get to know Michael and very sorry for those close to him, for their loss.

Blessings, peace and comforting from our Lord Jesus be yours now and for all time to come.

Lovingly, Janet Zurbrigg
