TAKYI, Carol Madonna (nee Holmes). It is with great sadness that the family of Carol Takyi of Sherwood Park announces her passing on June 18, 2021 at the age of 85. She is survived in Canada by her daughter Jennifer of Edmonton; sisters Dina and Connie in the United States, sister Kathryn in Ecuador, and their families; plus, cousins, nieces, nephews and their families in the United States. In Ghana, Carol is remembered by her stepson Sebretu, his wife Emma, and their three daughters, as well as other family in Ghana, and Ghanaian family in the United Kingdom and United States. Carol was born in Red Lake Falls, Minnesota in 1935. Upon graduation from high school in Minnesota, she worked in both Minnesota then California before attending the University of Minnesota to study Political Science and History, graduating cum laude. Here, she met, then married her husband Sam Takyi in 1961, who predeceased her in 2009. The family lived in Sam’s home country Ghana for nine years until 1972, at which time they moved to Canada, making their home in the Edmonton area, building two homes on two acreages south of Sherwood Park, both of which Carol designed. Carol had widely ranging interests throughout her life, becoming proficient at many of them, including keeping and riding horses, painting pictures, crochet, sewing, playing the guitar, home design and finishing, genealogy, and Japanese gardening. During her life in Canada, Carol was employed in editing, and finally at the Alberta Liquor Control Board. She is greatly missed. To honor Carol’s request she has been cremated, and no funeral service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of Carol’s favorite charities: Operation Smile via https://operationsmile.ca/ or https://www.operationsmile.org/.
