SPENCER, Derrick Joseph

Derrick Joseph Spencer, aged 52 years, of Beaumont, AB, died August 10, 2017 with his family by his side.  Born in Kelowna, BC, he spent his formative school years where he formed lifelong friendship bonds.  Married to his high school sweetheart, Linda, for over 30 years, together they raised two beautiful children, Riley and Layne.  Derrick completed secondary school to become a Power Engineer and lived in Medicine Hat, Fox Creek and Beaumont, AB.  He met numerous friends along his journey and he loved to entertain, host, and prepare large family style meals where laughter, games and story-telling were the norm.  Sports and activities were always in his life, having achieved a black belt in both judo and tae kwon do, and he sought outdoor adventure and travel as often as possible.  Derrick was a role model as a son, husband, father, brother, friend and mentor.  His humor and wit carried across many levels and his generosity was unmatched.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Telford House, 4907 – 46 Street, Leduc, AB.  His family, siblings and parents will be there to greet relatives and friends.

I got to know Derrick in Junior High school. Recently came across a picture of him at my 14th birthday party. My condolences to Linda, their children, and his family. I last saw him at our 30 yr high school reunion and his personality hadn’t changed – I’ll remember him always as such an easy going, witty guy. Truly caring in his nature. I’m glad to have known him.

I had the privilege of meeting Derrick about a year ago.
Derrick made me feel like I had known him for years when in fact it was Steve that he went to high school with. He had a genuine heart, was a lover of his fabulous family and was passionate about life. I am sure they cannot count how many people joined them in their “feasts”. Such a tragic loss Linda, Riley and Layne and all who knew him!

Derrick was a classmate of mine way back in the day, in Rutland, B.C. ( Kelowna ) We attended Quigley Elementary and Hollywood Rd Jr Secondary, where we were in Band together; and then I moved away and lost touch. I reconnected with Derrick on facebook. I enjoyed his posts – the witty, the serious, the food pics; and playing Scrabble with him. Living in a small rural area myself, I think of him every time we have to wait for traffic – he called it “rush minute” 🙂 The world has lost another good one. My condolences to his family.

Derrick and I shared the last chapter of his life together. We were the best of roommates at the Cross Cancer Institute, and remained close friends after our time there. He was a few years younger than me, but in many ways he was older too. Always a source of inspiration and strength. I know that he is in a more comfortable place, and is my dear friend now as ever.

I have got to know Derrick through my short stint at K3 and have remained good friend since. He was a mentor and I was his eyes and legs in the field and have learned a considerable amount through him. I will miss his humor and posts. My deepest condolences to his family. Godspeed Derrick.

Condences to all of Derricks loved ones. The world has lost a man who made all those around him comfortable, welcome, and feel like a long time friend. Generous in all facets, and kind in every regard. May he now rest in God’s grace in comfort.

Dawn Evans

I ADORED him – since I first met him, when he and Linda started dating. He was HILARIOUS! Self effacing – ESPECIALLY in THAT Speedo – my eyes will never be the same! I will miss you for an eternity Seabreeze!
