SETTERLUND, Gordon Emil

-

With sadness and joy, we announce that Gordon Emil Setterlund went home to be with his heavenly father at 6:25 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2, 2021. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Valborg Marie (née Langerud) and his granddaughter, Laura Ellen Setterlund. He will be greatly missed by his son, Warren (Brenda) Setterlund, and daughters, Carolyn (Dick) Hoetmer and Lorinda Travers. He will also be missed by grandchildren, Michael Setterlund, Colin (Keely) Maynard, Trevor (Amanda) Maynard, Laura Travers, and Christopher (Abigail) Travers and by eight great-grandchildren. Gordon was a father figure to Lillian (Dan) Mudge, and their family will also miss Gordon. He will be missed by many relatives and countless friends.

Gordon was born on October 2, 1930 in Daysland and was raised on the family farm in the New Norway and Metiskow areas. He attended the Temple Bible College in 1947-1950 and married the love of his life, Marie (Valborg) on May 26, 1951.  He, with his wife’s support, pastored churches across Western Canada while supplementing his income much of time by working as a carpenter and other secular jobs. Gordon taught at the Temple Bible and was the dean there for a number of years. He travelled extensively promoting the college, supporting mission ministries, and ministering in other churches throughout Canada and the United States. As Canadian Secretary and later as the Fellowship Pastor of the Fellowship of Christian Assemblies, he provided administrative skills and wise counsel. He was referred to as a “servant” to ministers and churches. He served as a mentor to those going into ministry, an encourager to small, struggling churches and was an inspiring preacher who always gave credit to God.

Gordon retired from active ministry in 1998 though he filled in at several churches off and on for a few years. He loved nature and greatly enjoyed the vegetation, birds, and wild animals on Dick and Carolyn’s acreage where he and Marie lived for eighteen years.

In January 2017, Gordon moved to a Seniors’ facility where Marie was placed for secure dementia care. When Marie was moved to long-term care at Shepherd’s Care, he moved to the Manor there so he could be close to his wife and visit her daily until she passed away on December 1, 2018. Gordon eventually moved to supported living and finally to long-term care at the Dr. Gerald Zetter Care Centre on November 26, 2020.

A Viewing will be held on Friday, March 5, 2021 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Service,  5311 91 Street, Edmonton. A Graveside Service will take place on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at South Haven Cemetery for immediate family and relatives. A Memorial Service will be held on March 6, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Crossroads Christian Assembly, 3203 92 Street NW, Edmonton. Since there is limited capacity, the Memorial Service will be in-person by invitation. The service will be livestreamed at richfieldchurch.ca for all others to watch.

Gordon was looking forward to passing from this life to the next. Though we will dearly miss him he has left a great legacy.

Carolyn, Lorinda and Warren,
Ron and I were so saddened to here about your father’s death. Not because he’s gone, because we’re obviously rejoicing with you that he’s with Marie, but because I had just told Ron I wish I had taken the time to tell him what an impact he had in our lives

He received me with open arms from being a baby Christian and led Ron to the Lord back in Zion Gospel Temple, and the rest is history from there. We have grown so much thanks to Pastor Gordon.

We have very many precious memories of him that will make us smile every time we think of him.

We pray God’s peace and Grace upon you and your families during this time

Blessings,

Ron and Grace Fink

My connections to Gordon start with both he and my dad, Leroy Larson coming from Metiskow. They were both students of Temple Bible College

It seems that you can’t talk about Gordon without including his wife Marie, they were one. They were my first pastors at Wildwood and I loved them. Both were great Christian examples to me. Gordon was Jesus’ Pearl of Great Price, a rare gem. I’m here today because a shepherd cared for a little lamb. Thank you, Warren Carolyn and Lorinda, for sharing your parents.
