SCHULTZ, Catherine Grace

Forever Our Sunshine

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our wife of Wes, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend and coworker on October 19, 2021 with Wes, Christine and Brent at her bedside as she passed peacefully.

Catherine Grace Korthuis was born June 25, 1961 to Popko (Bob) and Wilma Korthuis.

As a child she was quiet and loving.  She cared for everyone around her including her 1 sister Pat (who was also one of her best friends) 2 brothers Rob and Henry.  She said that with such a large family meal time was a battle and a race to ensure she got a full plate!

She met her loving husband Wes and got married June 21, 1980.  In-laws Eric and Clara Schultz always proudly loved Cathy.

They had two wonderful and amazing kids: Christine (Alan) and Brent (Amanda).  She did everything for these children.  She cooked, cleaned, crafted, played, set up “summer school”, even camped (which came out years later she wasn’t a huge fan of).  She encouraged her children to do their best, it wasn’t about being number one.  Their happiness and contentment was key.  The home, while realistically had its ups and down, was full of love. When her kids got married themselves, she welcomed the spouses in with open arms.  They became part of the family in her heart and mind.

The true loves of her lives were her 4 grandchildren:  Ariana, Raelyn, Anakin and Penelope.  They were her Sunshine and she was theirs.  She would spend every visit loving and doting on these kids with a heart full of joy.  The kids never questioned how loved they were by her.  She always had time for a story, a hug, an outing, a small gift or token.  She enjoyed taking nature walks, weekends away to Rosebud, meeting her friends for coffee or swimming, kickboxing classes and reading a good book on the back deck in the sunshine.

She will be forever missed by her family, friends, her Teachers Society DKG, friends Wendy and Ruth (The MadHatters) and her coworkers at JEM Precision.  She was kind, loving, giving and compassionate to everyone she met.

She sang to her grandchildren often “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are grey.  You will never know dear how much I love you.  So please don’t take my sunshine away”.  We know that she will forever be our sunshine and her light will be with us every step of the way for the rest of our lives.

She was predeceased by Bob, her father and Eric, her father-in-law.

A Celebration Life will be held in 2022 when conditions allow for better interactions.

In Lieu of Flowers Donations can be made to the Mazankowski Heart Institute, 11220 83 Avenue, Edmonton, AB on Cathy’s behalf. The staff at both the Mazankowski and Grey Nuns were all such a comfort and fully deserve our thanks. Serenity Funeral Services kindly provide their services.

I was so sorry to hear of Cathy’s sudden passing. I worked with her at Pylon. She was always friendly and kind, and was wonderful to work with.

I’d often ask about her grandkids, who sure seemed to be the center of her world! She was always doing something with them. I’m very sorry for what you all are going through. She is much missed at work and I’m so happy to have worked with her.
