It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Ervin Ralph Schmidt at the age of 97 years.
Ervin Ralph Schmidt, a kind and gentle man with a firm handshake and memorable chuckle, was born on September 9, 1924 in Rolly View. He passed away a few days after his 97th birthday. He was the son of Edward and Martha Schmidt and grew up in the Michigan Centre and Strawberry areas.
Ervin and Ella Maria Schmidt, were married on July 2, 1952 at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Morrowdale. The couple lived on the farm in Strawberry, adjacent to his parent’s property. After a few months they moved to, and later purchased the farm in Morrowdale from Ella’s parents. They raised their family and farmed there for over 50 years until the couple moved to Thorsby in 2007. Later, they resided at Lifestyle Options in Leduc and recently moved to MacTaggart Place in Edmonton.
As a boy he was found swimming and fishing in Strawberry Creek. He enjoyed visits to the mountains, playing cards with friends and family, and summer picnics. Management of his farming operation was always done with responsibility and integrity.
He had a love for music and could play the trumpet, baritone, guitar, banjo and harmonica by ear. He was the tenor in the church choir for many years. Before he was married, he played in band with his siblings and in a marching band.
Ervin is survived by his wife, Ella, married 69 years, daughters, Dorothy (Randy) Ritz of Edmonton, Noreen (Don) Seib of Airdrie, Rita (Brian) Raffety of Norfolk, Nebraska, and son, Lorne (Hiede) Schmidt of Macau: 9 grandchildren, Elias (Heather) Ritz, Talia Ritz, Duran Ritz (Mackenzie); Victoria Seib, Collin Seib; Marie (Warren) Kucera, Joel (Amanda) Raffety, Garett (Jen) Schmidt and Christina Schmidt: 4 great grandchildren; Rylan and Kaiden Kucera, Maeleigh and Lincoln Raffety: sisters-in-law, Theresa Schmidt, Emma Provence, Irma Schmidt, and Lucille Schmidt, along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
