SCHILLING, Albert Otto

On March 2, 2023, Al passed away peacefully at home at the age of 75, surrounded by the love of his family. Al was a devoted family man and a loving husband, father, Opa and friend. He will be dearly missed by Wendy (nee Cross) his wife of 46 years, sons Arthur (Roxanne) and Andy (Sammie), beloved grandchildren Albert and Audrey, sister Gerlinde Sergi, aunt Brigitte Krueger, cousin Gerhard Krueger, his extended family and many friends.

Al was born in Engen, Germany in 1948 and immigrated with his family to Edmonton in 1957. He and Wendy met in 1972. It was love at first sight and they they spent next 51 years together sharing their love of family, friends, and adventure travel. They were married in 1977.

For Arthur and Andy, it’s hard to imagine having had a better dad. Al dedicated himself to his family and supported the boys in every way. With endless patience and countless hours, he taught them to read and play sports and coached their teams. A calming presence, Al imparted wisdom and modelled life lessons about what it means to be a good man. As Opa, Al had the same passion for his grandchildren and delighted in spending time with them.

At the age of 33, Al graduated with a B.Ed to pursue his true calling. He loved children and was a gifted teacher and role model whose kind, patient and consistent approach motivated his students.

Al inspired many with his life-long dedication to fitness and healthy lifestyle. He was passionate about his hobbies and was a student of whatever pastime he took up. He was also famous for being able to nap anytime, anywhere.

Throughout his life Al, made deep and lasting friendships and touched the lives of many he met along the way. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Donations in Al’s memory can be made to YESS, https://yess.org/donate/. A celebration of Al’s life will be held at a later date.
