It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother due to COVID.
Phyllis was the youngest and last surviving of 11 siblings born to Barbara and Frank Herbach on the family farm near Unity Saskatchewan where she grew up and finished school. She briefly moved to Calgary to start working but shortly after travelled to Edmonton where she lived the rest of her life. It was in Edmonton that she met the love of her life Peter Buoy on a blind date. They married and had 5 children before she embarked on a life as a single parent with the youngest 2 yrs old. Phyllis worked many years at the Misericordia Hospital to help provide for a loving home for her kids which, as a single mother of five, was challenging at times. Her most difficult moments were the deaths of Peter in 1971, her first born child Jerry in 1984, and George Schellenberger, her second husband, on Christmas Eve 2004.
Despite these losses, especially her son, she maintained an incredible zest for life and took to heart her motto “You’re as young as you feel.” She never felt her age and decided neither breast cancer nor a broken hip would slow her down engaging in yoga into her 80’s and an exercise class until the pandemic started this year. She embraced learning new things and was a fervent embracer of technology, texting and posting to Facebook while in hospital. She enjoyed knitting for her kids and grandchildren and discussing current events and politics.
Phyllis felt blessed to have such loving children and many friends. She was in a long time dinner group meeting most months and a lovely group of women from the seniors centre. She started most of her days with oatmeal and a smoothie usually shared with Brian and Kevin.
Phyllis had a strong belief in God, and that faith sustained her in times of crisis and through a decades long membership in Annunciation Catholic parish.
She was stylish and beautiful and will be missed incredibly by her family Roberta (Bill), Brian (Lana), Kevin (Ann Marie), Karen (Larry); grandchildren Mark, Rachel, Hillary, Amie, Curtis, Mallorie, Julie, Ryan, Jeremy, Tyler, Kristie; and great grandchildren Leonard, Naomi, Camile, Theo, Tess, Stevie, Isla.
