SAHURI, Anne (Anja) Kaarina

Anne (Anja) Kaarina Sahuri (nee Utunen) passed peacefully in her sleep on August 8, 2022 at Glenmore Lodge in Kelowna, BC, Canada.

Anne was predeceased by her parents Pekka and Maria Utunen, her husband John (Juhani) Sahuri and her youngest son Dick Sahuri.

She is survived by her son Tim, his wife Paddy (nee Martin) and her grandsons Reid, Adam and Brett. Anne also leaves behind her daughter in law Donna Sahuri Dotinga (nee Crowther) and her grandsons Kyle and his wife Arden, Ryan Sahuri and his wife Veronica and her great granddaughter Sophia Ilona Sahuri.

Anne was born Anja Kaarina Utunen in Finland on May 22, 1936. She moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada with her parents Pekka and Maria Utunen in 1951 when she was 15 years old. This is where she met John Sahuri where they married in 1958. Together, Anne and John raised their two sons Tim and Dick in a close family that included Anne’s parents Pekka and Maria who lived nearby. The family spent most weekends at Floating Stone Lake where they built their lake house and enjoyed swimming, fishing, boating and, of course, the lakeside sauna.

Anne had a deep love of creativity and in her early life was active in painting, pottery, sculpture and poetry. Her creative writing expanded into a decades long devotion to writing articles for multicultural and Finnish Canadian Newspapers. She was very active in the multicultural scene in Edmonton and was an enthusiastic and devoted member of the Finnish Society.

Anne worked full time in finance at banks and private business while raising her family. She loved learning and was devoted to continuing education throughout her life. Her studies included attending the Banff School of Fine Arts where she studied Creative Writing as well as earning many college certificates in Accounting and Finance.

Anne remained in the family home in Edmonton until she required a higher level of care when she moved to a Seniors Home in Edmonton. She later moved to Calgary and finally to Kelowna, BC with her son Tim and family.

Anne will be remembered for her dedication to the Edmonton Finnish Community and never saying no to a party.
