It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Rudi P. Merschel at Drayton Valley Hospital and Care Centre on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at the age of 88 years.
Rudi came to Canada by boat in 1952. First arriving in Halifax, Rudi eventually made his way to Drayton Valley, where he met his true love, Lynn.
Together, Rudi and Lynn enjoyed their life on the acreage, raising their two children. For more than 33 years, Rudi operated the water treatment facility for the Town of Drayton Valley.
Rudi will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Lynn; children, Kathy – Lynn Merschel and Jeffery Paul Merschel; grandchildren, Katelynn Laura Jehn and Branden Rudi Merschel;
siblings, Heinze (Hildagard) Merschel and Ruth Habbermann, as well as several extended family and long-time family friends.
Rudi was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Auguste Merschel.
Respecting Rudi’s wishes, a formal funeral service will not be held. Memorial donations in honour of Rudi may be made directly
to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
The Merschel family would like to extend their gratitude to all friends, Drayton Valley Hospital staff
and OORP/Elks for all of their compassion, care and concern.
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
