Roy passed away on August 7, 2013 at the age of 79 at the Cross Cancer Institute after a brief battle with cancer.
He will be forever loved and cherished by his wife and soul mate Carol, after 56 years of marriage. Also survived by his two children: Blaine (Janice) and Rhonda (Dave), as well as his pride and joy granddaughters; Lisa and Sharla; his mother Thelma Acres; siblings: Nonie (Brian), Bill (Marilyn), Garry (Dolores); sister-in-law Faye (Allan) as well as many nieces, nephews, special friends and cousins.
Sadly Roy was predeceased by his only grandson Jerrit Acres.
Roy retired after 31 years of dedicated service with the Edmonton Fire Department, a job he loved. He will always be remembered for his humor and love of music, playing with a small group of friends at Care Centers and Nursing Homes for many years. He was dedicated to his Church family at Bethel Lutheran Church, Sherwood Park where he spent many hours volunteering. Roy and Carol spent sixteen years as Arizona Snow Birds, traveled on many trips, and enjoyed trailering through the years. The past six winters were spent on Maui, making many long term friends. It was Roy’s favorite place to be.
The family would like to thank the many friends and relatives who offered so much support during this stressful time. Very special thanks to Dr. John Amanie and the compassionate, caring staff on Station 40 of the Cross Cancer Institute, and Elaine and the Palliative Care Team. Also thanks to Roy’s family physician Dr. Colin Safranovich for his care and friendship over the years.
In respect to Roy’s wishes there will be no formal funeral. An open house for family and friends will be held on Saturday, August 17th, 2013 from 2:00-4:30 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, 298 Bethel Drive, Sherwood Park.
