Ronald Hugh Banks was born on March 21, 1931 in Davidson, SK. Ron’s childhood was spent on the family farm where he first found an inclination for building and design through the construction of a chicken coop. His brilliance for math and physics developed in a one-room school house. Armed with these skills, he entered the University of Saskatchewan, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1952. It was a natural progression to Montreal where he obtained his Master of Engineering in 1956 at McGill University. While in Montreal, he met a vivacious nursing student, Irene Prokopec of Sarnia, ON. They married in 1959 and moved to Winnipeg where Ron founded Banks Spronken and Associates Consulting Engineers which specialized in pre-cast concrete. Ron and Irene settled in the Westwood area with their continually growing family of four children. The booming Alberta economy beckoned in 1980 and Ron and Irene and the 3 youngest children headed to Edmonton where Ron continued work as a Consulting Engineer with Lamb McManus. Ron enjoyed retirement by traveling with Irene to exotic locations such as Tunisia, Argentina, Spain, Vietnam and Israel to name a few. Until the last year of his life, Ron was never far from a saw or hammer and always had a project on the go. While Ron found great satisfaction in work well done, the simple joy of times spent with his children were his happiest moments.
Ron was predeceased by his parents Stanley and Jean, his elder brother Harold, his younger brother Keith and his daughter-in-law Margaret. He is survived and so lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years; Irene, daughter Carol Loader (Greg) and grandchildren Tara and Madeleine of Winnipeg, sons: Robert (Annette) of Calgary, Brian of Edmonton, Donald (Sarah) and grandchildren Hudson and Ewan of Ottawa.
