RODENBURG, Cornelis (Cor)

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Cor in his 89th year after a short illness. He passed away peacefully on Friday, January 15, 2021 in the home he built surrounded by family.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 68 years, Truus,;two children: Klaas (Pat) and daughter Berndina (Peter Lokstadt); five grandchildren: Norma Rodenburg (Mike Chow), Elliott Rodenburg (Eboni); Melissa Rodenburg (Graeme Mellway); Nicole Lokstadt (Scott McGimpsey), Michele Lokstadt (Adam Benke); and two great-grandchildren: Madeline and Elizabeth Chow. He was predeceased by his brother Gerrit.

Cor was born in Amsterdam in 1932. He brought his family to Canada in 1967 and embraced his new home country with pride.

A craft carpenter, Cor would always lend his knowledge and tools to assist on any project that came up, and he built the home they lived in for 52 years. He enjoyed a long career as a finishing carpenter for several major home builders in Edmonton and later with the Edmonton Public School Board as an estimator and project manager. Cor enjoyed a long and healthy retirement.

Cor loved voetbal (soccer) and served as a coach, referee, referee assessor, and board member of numerous local organizations. In recent years he was an avid supporter at his great-grandkids’ games.

Road trips always brought him pleasure, and for many years he and Truus headed south with a trailer, and then later flew to warm weather. Annual road trips to the mountains with his trailer started with the long weekend in May and continued through the summer, often meeting up with other families. All his grandkids have fond memories of campfires and wildlife encounters on these weekends away.

A quiet reserved man, Cor’s family was a central part of his life. He liked nothing more than sitting quietly while all the busy activity flowed around him. His eyes lit up with visits from Maddie and Elizabeth, his great-grandkids. He was an integral part of the family, and we will miss him immensely.

At Cor’s request there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edmonton Food Bank or charity of one’s choice.
