Bob was born and raised in Drumheller, AB.
He attended the University of Alberta in the Faculty of Medicine, graduating class of 1945-46, where he was one of the first two residents taking a specialization in surgery. Graduate specialty training in surgery was undertaken at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago.
During his career, he was a member of the Alberta Surgical Society, and served on the boards of the American College of Surgeons, Canadian Association of Clinical Surgeons, Edmonton Academy of Medicine, Medical Staff of the University of Alberta Hospital in various executive positions.
Upon his retirement from active practice he served as external chief of staff at a rural hospital for a number of years.
Bob loved fishing and fly-tying, skiing, and spending time at the family cottage in Jasper.
He was predeceased by his parents Robert James Johnston Sr. and Blanche Frances (Svoboda) Johnston, and his sister Marjorie Anne
He is survived by his loving wife Jeanne, son Brian (Penelope), daughters Marjorie (Peter) and Laurie (Daniel), grandchildren Catherine (Glenn), Laura (Nathaniel), Lindsay (Robert) and Colin and five great grandchildren.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the caregivers of Retire at Home, and the staff of Capital Care Lynnwood 2nd Parker for their care and compassion.
