FISCHER, Robert Henry (Bob)December 20, 1933 – August 11, 2013Our beloved “Bob” passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 11, 2013, in the Lamont hospital at the age of 79, after courageously living with asbestos-related lung cancer (Mesothelioma) and lymphoma for the past two years.Bob will be dearly missed by his loving wife Norma of 54 years; their five children, Bradley, Barry (Tracey), Shelley (Stewart) Knapp, Jeffrey, and Michael (Karen), and their seven grandchildren, Kurtis, Kraig, Nicole, Zachary, Danae, Katelyn, and Cole; one brother Val, three sisters Marjorie McClean, Dorothy Inkster and Jean Israel and families.He was predeceased by his parents Annie and John; two infant grandchildren, Darby and Kyla; four sisters, Mary, Hilma, Lila, Phyllis, and four brothers, John, Samuel, Ed, and Wilf, and two infant siblings. After working on the family farm from an early age, and hauling gravel for Poole Construction to the Sherritt Gordon plant site, starting in 1954, Bob worked for 38 years for Sherritt Gordon Mines in the ammonia and fertilizer plants. Bob coached baseball and was ball director in Fort Saskatchewan for nine years, and was the first to introduce T-ball to the local organization. During that time he was actively involved as a Cub leader. Both Bob and Norma were actively involved in all the group activities that their children participated in. He enjoyed fishing and camping with his family, and getting together with his many friends and family, either for a game of cards, or a cup of coffee. He enjoyed many hours farming and looking after his garden.Later in life, Bob joined the local Lions club and spent 25 years with them, a number of them as President and Zone Chairman, organizing the building and fundraising for the Lions Haven Seniors Centre, the Dow Centre, the Eye Bank and many other activities, living by his motto “To serve”! A great part of his efforts through the summer months was ensuring the local Lions wading pool was operational, installing and upgrading all the pool and playground facilities. Bob was honored many times by the local, provincial and International Lions organizations for his countless hours of community service.A Celebration of Bob’s Life will be held on Monday August 19 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Church in Fort Saskatchewan, 10409 – 100 Avenue.
