It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Irene Ochotta of Edmonton, Alberta. Irene passed away peacefully at Grey Nuns Hospital at the age of 94. She is survived by her 3 sons, David (Elizabeth), Peter (Darlene), and Emil (Bin); 6 grandchildren, Sam, Stephen, Andrew, Mike, Nicholas, and Annabelle; sister Ollie; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her ex-husband, Nick in 2009.

Irene was born Irene Shandro on March 21, 1926 and raised on a farm near Shandro, Alberta. Her parents were Stefan Shandro and Sofia Shandro (Chorny). The Shandro-Bodnar clan, as Irene referred to it, included 15 children of Stefan and his first wife (Anastasia), 6 children of Sofia and her first husband (Michael Bodnar), and then 3 daughters from Stefan and Sofia: Rose, Irene, and Ollie. Ollie is the last surviving of the 24 siblings.

In her earlier days, after doing her chores, Irene enjoyed sports, dancing, and singing. She loved to sing in the choir at the Orthodox church. Later, she continued her singing at the Crossroads Christian Assembly – where she also became very involved in many roles, including being a founding member and an elder. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in her name to the Crossroads Christian Assembly.

Due to Covid restrictions, Irene will be interred at a private family gathering. Family and friends may join by virtual attendance by viewing the livestream on Thursday, February 25, 2021 at 11:00 am at https://distantlink.com/SerenityES.html.

Irene was a regular poster on the 100words.ca Christian blog. Her comments, which were always uplifting and encouraging, will be forever missed. She had a wonderful spirit. We look forward to seeing her, one day, in heaven. Safe in the arms of Jesus, sweetly thou shalt rest, Irene. Sweetly thou shalt rest.

I was saddened to hear today of Irene’s passing . For many years she was a pillar in the Aglow West Edmonton Lighthouse and I will miss her bright smile and her deep commitment and love for the Lord. I also enjoyed singing with her at many gatherings and Aglow meetings we both attended. She is home now and dancing and singing His praises in heavens choir .

I knew Irene from directing the Southwest Seniors Choir. Irene had a lovely soprano voice and many of the ladies wanted to sit near her as she always knew her parts so well! In the Fall 2019 when she wasn’t feeling well, she still came to choir practices, using Uber well before I had even tried it once.
I am privileged to have known Irene, and please accept my condolences to the family.

You will be greatly missed. It was great to be with you in the Wednesday ladies bible study group. And it was wonderful to be with you in the Southwest Senior choir.

Fred & Alma Glennie

Condolences to the Ochotta family. We miss Irene very much but we know that she is no longer suffering from any sickness or disease. Irene and I were secret sisters a couple of different times and we shared the same birthdate. I will miss your beautiful card this year!!
May God bless the family of Irene and may you find comfort knowing that Irene is with Jesus, her Lord and Saviour!

Our lives have intertwined much over the years from CFO camps, to Israel travels, to faithful prayer partners and finally to singing together in our latter years.
She has been a blessing and we know is embracing all God has for her in the great beyond.
Love & blessings,
Stella and family.

I remember Irene as early as my teenage years. She was a good friend of my mother Marian De Long, and was often an encouragement to me growing up at the same church. In my twenties between a job and schooling, I spent many mornings at ladies prayer with a number of older women and learned so much from Irene and my Mom. I will always treasure that time of growth in my spiritual life! My Mom was saddened to hear the news but we are both overjoyed to know she is with our Lord and Saviour and has joined the Heavenly choir! Prayers of peace to all who are missing her!

So sorry to hear of Irene’s passing. Was part of and often had the Wednesday morning prayer group at my house before moving into a condo in Dec 2015 and mostly losing contact with the group. I always enjoyed being near Irene as could always learn something new in my Christian walk and she always would try to make sure we kept to our weekly meetings. Also great to finally learn her real age as she would never tell us.

Sister Irene was a remarkable God’s general. She was an example of dedication to God and commitment to the body of Christ. She used her gifts of the Holy Spirit artistic and writing talents to bless the church. I still have the silver necklace/pendent, personalized cards and messages… she sent to me as my “Secret Sister” a few years back.
May the Lord comfort her family and the church.
May her gentle and generous soul rest in peace.

It was with great sorrow that I heard of the passing of my “aunt” Irene (for she truly was a sister to my mother, Rita). I just watched this beautiful service and will always celebrate Irene’s beautiful spirit, and my memories of her. I wish all of her family peace. Claudia

From childhood Aunt Irene, together with her sisters and brothers, adopted our mother Rita as one of their own and played a big role in the lives of my siblings and myself. Our lives were enriched because of this, and we are saddened to know she is gone. We are sorry for your loss and send you our heartfelt condolences and love, from Connie and family
