Murphy, Helen R.

1930-2020

With great sadness, the family of Helen Murphy announces her passing on Monday, March 30, 2020.

Helen is survived by her four children, Judy (Jim), Conrad (Glennis), Jim (Brenda), and Loree (Brad); eight grandchildren, Jill (Marc), Jay, Cassidy (Orlan), Kael, Jesse, Jamie, Jake, and Meghann (Jesse); and five great-grandchildren, Jack, Mitch, Alex, Lachlyn, and Amelia.  She is also survived by her sister, Mamie; and brothers Stanley, Andy and Wesley.  She was predeceased by her husband Jerry; both of her parents; and brothers Art, Jack, and Dennis.

Helen was raised on a farm in Rolly View.  In her teenage years she worked at the country store in Clover Lawn before moving to Leduc where she met and married Jerry and eventually settled in Edmonton.  Soon after starting their family, Helen became homemaker extraordinaire.  No one could bake bread, pies or cookies like Helen, and she was a favourite with the neighbourhood children for her hot chocolate and cinnamon buns.  Along with baking, she sewed and grew a beautiful garden.  Always active in the community league with her children’s sporting activities, she also played first base for the women’s baseball team.  Helen loved a good party and often helped with the planning of community dances and special events.  Hours of laughter was spent at their cabin at Skeleton Lake with friends and family playing cards and cooking outdoors over a wood stove.  She also enjoyed playing her guitar and singing a little Johnny Cash.

A Celebration of Helen’s Life will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation.  The family would like to thank the staff of Nursing Station 21 at the Leduc Hospital for the compassionate care they provided.
