Michael Asghar passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of March 17 at the age of 82. He is survived by his wife Agnes, daughters Sheila, Rina and Rina’s partner Oscar, canine grandchildren Vicky, Pasha, Deborah and Emma Jane.
Michael was born in the small town of Palampur in a mountainous region of North India. After obtaining a BSc in Chemistry at Khalsa College in Amritsar, he embarked on an adventurous journey to Betong, Sarawak (East Malaysia). He returned to India after a year and with his new bride returned to the jungles of Borneo where his first daughter Sheila was born. The family then moved to Miri and their second child Rina was born. From Miri the family moved to Brunei Darussalam where he worked as a science lecturer at the University of Brunei Darussalam. He pursued a MPhil in his later years at the University of Nottingham, UK. An avid sportsman, he loved to play cricket, badminton, and tennis.
Seeking a better future for his children he made the decision to immigrate to Canada in 1991 settling in Sherwood Park, Alberta. He loved his home, his garden, his trees and his neighborhood community. Michael was an active member of St. Thomas Anglican Church and served as a lay reader for many years.
A Funeral Service for Michael will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at 2:30pm at St. Thomas Anglican Church, 4A Raven Drive, Sherwood Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Michael’s name to charities dedicated to the treatment and research of dementia and cancer.
