MERIOT, Roland Rene

It is with great sadness and much love that we say goodbye to our beloved father and husband Roland (Rollie), who passed away January 28, 2021 at the age of 88.

Roland was born in Villers-Les-Ormes, France in 1932. After proudly serving in the French Navy, he moved to Canada in 1955 with his wife and infant daughter. Dad successfully built his business, Merrywood Construction Ltd. Over the years, this included custom homes, family housing, commercial projects, and real estate. His most notable achievements included building his family home and the Meriot building, located in Old Strathcona. Roland enjoyed the outdoors, travelling and working at his trade. He always had time for his family and friends.

Roland is lovingly remembered by his adoring wife of 65 years, Josette, daughter Betty, son Perry (Cheryl), grandchildren Natalie, Ashleigh, Sofia and Sebastien. He leaves behind his sister Odile (Pierre), many nieces and nephews, friends as well as his special pets Bear, Cosmo, Domino, Dixie, and Harley.

Roland was predeceased by his parents Octave and Marie Meriot, his eldest daughter Martine (Glwyn), sister Huguette (Jean), brothers Gerard (Sylviane) and Michel (Bluette).  A private family service was held Thursday, February 4th.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to all the support at this difficult time. They would also like to extend a special thank you to the staff from Unit 5D2 at the University of Alberta Hospital. Your care and compassion for Dad will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Roland’s memory may be made directly to the Canadian Diabetes Foundation (  or to the University of Alberta Hospital Foundation (

Tribute wall - a place to share your memories and condolences

Karen Fontaine

I am not sure but Mr Ronald Meriot was a friend lof my late father who passed away in 1976. My father in about 1966 asked Mr Meriot to help translate my French letter and he did so..he had aslo planned on going to France to visit my friends family in France as he stated in his French letter explaining who he was and that he was asked to assit in translating into English. My pen pal still is writing me and just yesterday discovered the letter and had emailed it to me. I felt that I could leave a Tribute in his memory to attest to his generous nature that facilitated my friend and my friendship that still continues since 1964.
Rest In Peace and God Bless you, Mr Ronald Meriot and I truely thank you as you were friends with my late father Harry Fontaine .

Nous partageons votre chagrin en ces moments difficiles et vous présentons nos plus sincères condoléances. Au moment où ce terrible deuil vous frappe, il est essentiel pour nous de vous assurer de notre soutien très affectueux.
