McQUAY, Robert James

-

Bob passed away peacefully in his sleep early in the morning of April 7th. He had fought a lengthy battle with cancer, never once losing his spirit of optimism and his sense of humor.

He was predeceased by his wife Marion in 2004. He is survived by his children Valerie (Ted), John (Sharon) and Joy (Curt). He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 47 great grandchildren. His two sisters Florence (Len deceased) and Beverley (Roger) also mourn his loss. He was always excited to hear updates on all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Bob was born in Treherne, Manitoba where he participated actively in all sports, a pattern that continued until his passing. He used to ride his bicycle 15 kms to court Marion. He often admitted that he didn’t deserve such a wonderful lady in his life as Marion. He loved his job working for CBC as cameraman and later technical producer as he was involved in televising many major sporting events such as the Olympics, Stanley Cup playoffs, and the CFL as well as numerous others. One of his prized memories is that he was the first person to score a goal in the first ever hockey game played in Hawaii. He participated in the Alberta Senior Games and has represented Edmonton there in both golf and snooker. Bob loved life and especially sports! It was not uncommon to see 2 or 3 TV’s set up in the living room with sports on while a radio in the background carried another game.

Bob loved the nurses and doctors who treated him the last 2 ½ years. Our thanks go to Dr. Hamilton, the staff at the Kaye Clinic and the staff at the University of Alberta Outpatient Clinic. Bob knew them all by name and wanted to visit one last time to say goodbye.

His pleasant personality and good nature will be missed by all.

It was with a sad heart I discovered the news of Bob’s passing. As he and my own father (also named Bob) were fast friends from Treherne, I’d heard many stories of their escapades together and I knew that, throughout the years, they had remained close – staying in touch by email and by phone. Over the last couple of years I had several opportunities to get to know Bob and spoke to him numerous times by phone myself. And, although we never met in person, I understood that my dad had, indeed, made an excellent choice in keeping his friend; for I also recognized that Bob was a person of wisdom, generosity, humour and integrity. The last time I spoke to him was early in the new year; however, Bob had been on my mind recently and I wanted to reach out to him. When I mentioned this to my sister, Joanne, she discovered the sad news of his passing.

While nothing can bring back our “Prairie boys”, I do know that both of our families have been blessed with the many gifts of their positive, loving natures. So I am sending my deepest condolences to everyone in the McQuay family. May you all hold those gifts close to your hearts going forward.

To Bob’s family. I was so saddened to read of Bob’s passing. While I never had the great opportunity to meet Bob I had talked with him on the phone on a couple of occasions as he and my Dad Bob McMillin were dear longtime Treherne friends! My Dad passed away in December last year and again Bob reached out to me and my sister. We always enjoyed our chats just as my Dad had all these years as the two of them kept in touch regularly by phone and email. I was recently looking for Bob’s contact information online to send him a copy of our Dad’s obituary that we thought he’d like to read and sadly I found Bob’s obituary. Heartfelt condolences to Bob’s family; he gave great joy to our Dad with past stories, reminiscing and lots of laughter. Two very special Bob’s, together again❤️ God speed.
