Alfred Clayton McGhan of Leduc, AB passed away peacefully at 90 years of age in the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, AB on July 28, 2016.
Alfred was born on August 29, 1925 in his home where the tennis courts are now located in McGhan Park (Sherwood Park). In 1981, his years of community service were recognized with the awarding of an Honourary Doctor of Laws Degree from the University of Alberta. Alfred and his wife Phyllis recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in June.
Alfred and Phyllis farmed in the Ridgewood district west of Red Deer from 1955 to 1990, moved to Edmonton for a few years and then owned/operated the 49th Street Express in Calmar for about 10 years. They finally retired in Leduc where Alfred continued his volunteer activities in the community. In addition to his wife, Phyllis, Alfred is survived by children Viola (Barry Lazzer), Thomas (Janice), Clayton (Tami), 10 grandchildren: David, Christine, Carmen, Gregory, Leslie, Ryan, Michael, Cherice, Kimber and Scott; and 5 great-grandchildren: Claire, Zachary, Katherine, Olivia, and Keegan. He was predeceased by his daughter Susan.
A Graveside Service will be held at the Red Deer Cemetery on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at St. David’s United Church, 4614 – 48 Street, Leduc, AB on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.
