It is with great sadness that we, her family, announce the passing of our beloved sister and aunt, Lydia McDonald, at the age of 100 years.
Lydia will be missed by her sisters Frieda Jones and Hilda Rilling, sister-in-law Ruby Hansen, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents Louise and Thomas Hansen, husband Robert McDonald, and brothers Albert, Carl, Herman, and Alfred Hansen.
Lydia was born September 8th, 1920 in Sibbald, Alberta. She was a very brilliant and talented lady. She obtained her RN degree at the Royal Alex Hospital School of Nursing in Edmonton. Later continued her schooling in Anderson, Indiana where she finished a degree in Bachelor of Arts. She was called by the Lord to be a missionary in Africa and spent 23 years as a missionary nurse in Kenya, Africa. She later married Robert McDonald in 1973. They moved to Jackson, Mississippi where she worked as a nurse. They were very active in their church community. Lydia became a midwife at the University of Mississippi and worked in Georgia and Mississippi as a midwife until she retired in her early 80’s. She continued doing what she enjoyed doing in Kenya, delivering babies and looking after mothers. Lydia and Robert were married 36 years until his passing in 2009. She moved back to Alberta in 2010 to be closer to her family.
She spent the last 3 years at West Country Hearth in Villenhue. We would like to thank the staff for all the care and support given to Lydia in the past 3 years.
Lydia lived a wonderful 100 years and will be missed by many.
A celebration of her life will be at a later date.
