Maurice was born in Camrose to Franklin and Christina (Hough) Carter, the fifth of eight children. He attended school at Daresbury, ten miles south of Camrose, and began Grade 10 at Camrose High, before taking over farming on the family farm.
Alma’s first teaching assignment was in Daresbury in 1947, where they met. They married in 1950 and moved to the Keephills area to farm, and where Maurice sought employment with Calgary Power building power lines. He was later employed by TransAlta at the Sundance power plant where he enjoyed great camaraderie and was always happy to go to work. He also kept telephone lines repaired in the early years.
Maurice leaves to mourn, his wife Alma (Scheideman) of 66 years; daughters Susan (David O’Reilly) and Laurel, son Dave (Linda), son-in-law Dave Hoffman; his grandchildren Jake O’Reilly, Ian Dingwall (Jenn), Jay Dingwall (Michelle), Chris Carter (Kelley), Angela (Ryan McKay), Tyson Carter (Bailey), Shanae Hoffman; his great-grandchildren Seth Carter and Emery Mae McKay; and his sister and brother-in-law Norma and Owen Wensley.
Maurice was predeceased by his son-in-law Lewis Dingwall, his daughter Ellen Hoffman; brothers Kenneth, Sandy and Donald; sisters Doris, Alice and Donna.
Maurice and Alma retired to Stony Plain in 2003. In the past two years Maurice was first hospitalized at Westview and later in the Good Samaritan Care Centre. A special thanks to caregivers who were always kind and who were happy to help Maurice get up in the morning because he was always cheerful and fun. Maurice passed away very peacefully in his room at the Good Sam on December 10.
A Memorial Service will be held at Stony Plain United Church on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Sally Boyle officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mewassin United Church and Parkinsons.
