Mary Poetker (nee Dueck) was born May 12, 1920 in Aliessowo, Russia, to Jacob and Tina Dueck. The family came to Canada in 1926 and settled in Coaldale, Alberta. In 1948, she married Paul Poetker, and they had seven children.
Mary was a lovely, kind and compassionate person with a great sense of humour and quick wit. She loved to play games and was difficult (impossible for some) to beat in games such as scrabble and chess. She also loved to travel and travelled extensively.
Mary was both creative and industrious as evidenced by her amazing gardens, fabulous baking and cooking, and her handiwork. Mary was featured along with her quilts in Legacy magazine. She loved to paint and often painted familiar subjects, bringing out quirky and interesting details.
Mary will be missed by her husband Paul; her children Sharon (Jamie), Clarence, Albert (Pam), David (Monika), Corinne (Manfred), Katherine (Brian), and Lillian (Dave); as well as 18 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and one sister Lydia. She was predeceased by her parents; brothers Peter, Jacob and Johnny; and sisters Susie, Tina and Helen.
Although not physically well in her last years, she was always positive and embraced life, and for many, that was one of her greatest legacies. We loved her and will miss her dearly.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Greenfield Baptist Church, 3712-114 Street, Edmonton.
