Louil M. Keeling

Our dear Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother Louil Keeling passed away at age 85 on May 9, 2018. With our sadness also comes comfort, in knowing that she had a full, happy life and remained independent until she was very close to the time of her passing. Her little blue car was a big part of that independence and allowed her the freedom to get out daily and see friends and family. She was fearless, and if there was one car on the road with 20 inches of new snow, it would be hers.

Louil was the eldest of 3 children, born to Bob and Alma Shears in Lamont, Alberta, and lived there until she moved in to Edmonton following high school. Her interesting name had its origins in the honouring of one of her mother’s good friends who was a nursing classmate.

She married Don Keeling in 1954, with whom she enjoyed a life filled with family, good friends, lots of music, and travel. Don passed away in April of 2014, just short of their 60 wedding anniversary.

She had worked for many years at the U of A Hospital as an Electrocardiogram Technician, and later became leader of that department. She made many good friends at work and set a notable example with her great work ethic by not missing a day of work in her 20+ years there. She was a true believer in the science of modern health care and even in her last days liked to talk to hospital staff about her days working at the University Hospital.

She will be lovingly remembered for her strength of character, her sense of humour, and her selfless consideration of others in every aspect of her life.

She is survived by her 3 children, Donna (Dave) Brown, David (Amanda) Keeling, and Kathy (Ernie) Storti, as well as 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild, her sister Betty (Harold) Brucker and her sister-in-law Janet Shears.

As well as her husband Don, she was predeceased by her brother Ross Shears.

Cremation has taken place. At her request, a small private service will be held at graveside.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society,  55 St Clair Avenue West  Suite 300, Toronto, Ontario M4V 2Y7, http://www.cancer.ca/en/donate/?region=ab
