Lockhart, William James (Jim)

With deep sadness, we announce that William James (Jim) Lockhart, beloved husband, dad, papa, brother, uncle, and dear friend, died October 4, 2022, in Edmonton. He will be forever loved and remembered by his wife of 59 years, Sandra (Stata); children Michelle (Dana) Jones, Ian (Jørgen Hopperstad) and Erin (Len) Robinson; and his cherished grandchildren Colton, Dawson, Liam, Kara, and Madeleine. Jim will also be remembered by his sister, Elaine (Raymond) Haggarty, brothers John (May) and Sam (Barb), and their families. Jim leaves behind numerous cousins in Canada, the USA, New Zealand, and the UK. He was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Lella (Dole), and nephew Doug.
Jim was born in 1938 in High River, Alberta, and raised on a farm in the Hartell area of southern Alberta. He was very involved in the 4-H program with great memories of his national 4-H train trip to Toronto and Ottawa in 1958. He graduated from the Olds School of Agriculture (Olds College) in 1959, then achieved his BSc (Agriculture) in 1963 and MSc in Agricultural Economics from the U of A. He was employed by the public service of Canada for 32 years, retiring in 1993. Upon retirement, Jim and Sandra enjoyed nearly 30 years of travelling and adventures. Jim and Sandra cultivated lifelong friendships and created many happy memories with family. Their home was always welcoming to all.
Jim’s passions were his family, friendships and the ranch. He enjoyed being out on the land, hiking, gardening, skiing, and watching wildlife. He so cherished his friendships with his 1963 classmates, and the friends he made through the Canadian Club of Edmonton, curling, church and bridge. He worked hard, read, volunteered, danced, camped, farmed and played all his life. Jim’s memory will live on in our hearts. His legacy of fairness, determination, and devotion to the causes he supported will live on in his family and friends.
The family is especially appreciative of the care provided at the Roozen Family Hospice Centre, and we sincerely thank his family physician, Dr. Taryn Baise.
As an expression of sympathy, contributions may be made to Pilgrims Hospice Society at pilgrimshospice.com, the Southminster-Steinhauer United Church Memorial Fund, the Youth Empowerment & Support Services (yess.org), or a charity of one’s own choosing.
