LESTER, Geoffrey Austin

With a deep sense of sorrow and loss, our family announces the passing of our father, Geoffrey Austin Lester on May 18, 2022 at the age of 91 years. Geoffrey is survived by his son, Roderick of Edmonton, and his daughter, Margaret (Rick) of St. Albert, as well as granddaughter, Ashley Wiebe, of Edmonton, and his sister, Barbara of Victoria, B.C. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary, in 2012, and his brother, Alan, in 2021.
Born in China in 1930, Geoffrey settled permanently in Canada in 1947. He received his Batchelor of Arts from UBC in 1957, and in 1959 he was ordained as a minister in the United Church of Canada. It was during this time as a minister that he met Mary Stimpson, and they married in January of 1962. Geoff went on to further his studies and in 1966 received his Master of Arts/Geography at the University of Alberta. A couple of years later, Geoffrey returned to the University of Alberta to become Head Cartographer in the Department of Geography from 1969 until his retirement in 1995. He was also Head Cartographer on the Railway Atlas of Alberta, a project that was near and dear to his heart.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the Palliative Home Care unit, Pod A, as well as the doctors and nurses at the Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital for their kindness, support and care shown to Geoffrey during his final days.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
