Roy Edward LaValley

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dearest Roy who left us on April 7, 2022 after a brief battle with Covid.

Leroy (Roy) Edward LaValley was born to Emmanuel (Man) and Jeanette LaValley on January 27, 1935 in Lethbridge Alberta. Roy grew up in Lethbridge where he met his future bride, Cecilia Wukusich.  They married in 1959 and had four children, living in various places in BC and AB. Roy had a diverse career, working as a photographer and journalist for the Lethbridge Herald, sales representative with Seagram’s, ranching with his parents near Wardlow, AB, and writing for the Hanna Herald.  He moved to Trail, BC to work as a newscaster and for the local radio station CJAT and had a side gig calling the stock car races.  After a brief career in insurance, he moved back to the ranch to help his father.  When his father sold the ranch, Roy was able pursue a law degree at the University of Alberta. He articled under Gene Kush, Q.C. in Hanna, AB where he was admitted to the bar in 1977.  He had various positions with the Government of Alberta, working for the Office of the Public Trustee, the Alberta Motor Transport Board, Transportation and the Metis Settlements Commission.  In his retirement Roy enjoyed touring with Cecilia in their 5th wheel and visiting with family and friends.

Roy was predeceased by his wife Cecilia, sister Vivienne, nephew Patrick, and his parents. He is survived by his children Keith (Myrna), Glen (Margo), Judith (Brian), and Janet (Dave), his grandchildren Wendy, Robert, Matthew, Maja, Robin, Eldon, Alex, and Chloe, his great-grandchildren Mackenzie and Sawyer, his nieces Cathy, Shannon, and Susan, and his nephew Michael.

Roy found joy in helping others and making friends; he will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers we ask that you say a prayer, help a stranger, and keep yourself and others safe.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Jubilee lodge for their care and compassion.

I knew Roy for many years when we both worked for what was then the Alberta Attorney General’s Department. He was a good, kind and generous man, and a very effective lawyer. Rest in peace, Roy, you earned it.
