KELKER, Dorothy Marie

On May 4th we said goodbye to Dorothy Marie Kelker, whose brief and vibrant life has quietly come to an end.

During her 44 years with us she shared much joy, explored the world around her with curiosity, shared and contributed creatively, and touched and taught many with infectious enthusiasm. Till the end she was engaged in all that went on within and around her, welcoming birds to her window feeder and friends to her bedside.

Dorothy is held in love by her mother, Henriette Kelker (née Reinouts van Haga), sister Anke Kelker, partner Dan Brodribb, and a loving circle of extended family and friends around the world. Dorothy was predeceased by her father, Douglas Kelker.

We are grateful for all the support we have received along the way.

Dorothy loved all forms of outdoor life and sharing this with others. Donations in her name may be made to Special Olympics Canada or the Nature Conservancy of Canada, or, she suggests, “plant a tree!”

A celebration of Dorothy’s life will take place on May 20, at 7:00 PM at Southminster Steinhauer United Church in Edmonton.

We “grew up together” at Grandview and church and playing bells. What a treat to see Dorothy as a colleague in environmental education – we kept missing each other by a year or two with different employers, but I loved knowing the public would get to work with her too. I was impressed by her attention to the craft and presence with each person. We also were unstoppable as a team at the very high end (or sometimes the very low end) of the bell table! Sending love to Henriette and Anke and Dan. Feels much too soon.

I wish you all peace at this difficult time. I had the pleasure of working with Dorothy at Our Chalet in Adelboden Switzerland. Her enthusiasm, creativity and positivity made her such a unique and vibrant person that I have been privileged to have in my life. I so lucky to have met and worked with Dorothy, she will truely be missed.

I am very sad to hear of Dorothy’s death. Over our short time working together at Alberta Camping Association, I came to know Dorothy as a smart, knowledgeable, effective team member, but it was her generosity and compassion, and her enthusiasm for nature and music, and her love for her family that stayed with me. I am so grateful to have known her. Peace be with you at this time of great loss. Much love.

Anke and Henriette, my throughs and prayers are with you and your family. I was lucky to meet and get to know Dorothy in UAMC and UAFEHR (handbells). I last saw her in person at the mixed chorus concert which celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the University of Alberta Faculty of Edmonton Handbell Ringers, but we often shared and liked various things on Facebook. She will be missed.

Anke and Henriette, my thought and prayers go out to you and your family in your loss. I was lucky to get to know Dorothy in UAMC. Over the years we had crossed paths and it was always a joy to see her smile and hear her laugh. She will be missed.
