To my dearest friend Katherine Barnes you are my longest friend in my whole life you outlasted both my husband’s and were a mother to my children. I feel so close to you you are my sister. You were in my life when I had great loss and great gain and I was proud to be in yours. You are the strongest woman I’ve ever known and when you asked me to be with you for this last journey it was the greatest honor of my life .I am so glad I was with you when you took your last breath. Watching this disease ravage your body was the most painful thing I have ever seen but you were strong until the end. I feel so much love for you and my heart broke into a million peices when this disease took your life. I feel you with me forever and I love you forever. There needs to be more discussion about breast cancer and we need to save more lives!!#worldcancer day

Amy, on behalf of all Kathy’s siblings

This tribute for Kathy is being written with great sorrow. There should have been another 20 years before any of our siblings passed. There should have been more time to build more memories with each other. We will remember her for so many reasons.
Kathy went back to school and found her career in education, found true happiness and love with her husband Leroy and raised a wonderful son, Ryan, who is just a talented and smart and good young man.

Kathy battled against cancer for over two years. We all felt her courage and are thankful that she went so bravely through all her treatments and all the difficulties she faced. She fought hard to her last day against the cancer that took her away.

Amy and Mary and Eva are fortunate we were able to fly back to Edmonton. It meant the world to say goodbye and reconnect with our family there. We are fortunate that Kathy’s true sister, Julie, and her daughter, Nikki, were there in her last days. Thank you to Doug for accomodations made while we were there. Thank you to Leroy for putting up with us and being strong for Kathy. It was wonderful to spend some time with Ryan, who we look forward to bringing out to B.C. soon!

We will remember to be grateful for the lessons we are learning through this time of grief; to value our loved ones, and our time and how we spend it. To appreciate every day and to focus on our priorities. To cherish the moments in the moment. It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our beautiful sister Kathy, we will remember her with so much love.

Kathy Overn

I met Kath at LYC where we worked as EAs (Educational Assistants). When we were both on disability, we finally had time to connect. We began meeting for coffee, lunch, movies, shopping, errands and a couple of treatments at the Cross. A year later, Kathy was doing well and I was diagnosed with breast cancer, too. She showed me the ropes and gave me all kinds of advice, encouragement and support. Later, she got bad news about her cancer, but she never stopped fighting and being positive. I, too, will not give up at any step of the way because of her example.
I am so grateful for the time we had and the friendship we forged. I will never forget the laughing, crying and sharing of our stories.
Rest now, my friend. I will miss you for the rest of my days.
Love Kath ❤
