JOSHEE, Karuna

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother, Karuna Joshee.

Karuna was born in Batala, Punjab, India and grew up in Delhi. As a girl and young woman she was involved in working for the betterment of her community and her country; sentiments she carried with her throughout her life. She became a teacher and helped to establish a school in Banga, Punjab, the city where her family settled after her father’s retirement. When she was 23 she married her husband Krishan and the two began a blessed partnership that lasted 58 years. Together they had 4 children: Rajan, Rashmi (Marc), Reva, and Rakesh (Lisa). Mom was always our first and most important teacher.

Krishan and Karuna came to Canada in 1960 and 1961, respectively, settling first in Spirit River and then coming to Edmonton in 1967. Karuna quickly became known for her talents as a cook and hostess. Her home was a welcoming place for anyone who came to visit. She was also a talented seamstress, knitter, gardener and poet. But her greatest role was as the matriarch of our extended family. She loved and nurtured everyone in the family and took great pride in everyone’s accomplishments.

In addition to her children, she leaves behind, her brother, Prem, sisters-in-law, Shobhana, Renu and Eleanora,  6 grandchildren: Reamonn (Bonita), Carn (Kristina), Kael (Nikolina), Gabriel, Daniel, and Anu, 4 great-grandchildren, Sevinn, Tristinn, Aidan, and Ava, and several nephews, nieces and kinship grandchildren. Karuna was predeceased by her parents, Ganda Ram and Ram Pyari, her husband, Krishan, and her brother, Naresh.

A memorial service and havan (prayer ceremony) will be held on November 10, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Meridian Banquet Hall,  4820 76 Ave NW, Edmonton

In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Jai Jagat 2020 Global Peace March or the Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace.–community-news/in-memory-of-karuna-joshee
