MASON, JOHN TOWNSLEY
July 16, 1928 – November 2, 2014
John passed peacefully, after a lengthy illness, at the age of 86 with his family by his side. He will be forever loved and cherished by Doreen, his wife of 62 years; children: Bryan (Leslie), Jane (Jim), Jill and Alan (Dawn); grandchildren: Scott, Laura, Anne, Patrick, David, Rebecca, Erinn, James and John. He was predeceased by his sisters Freda Sather and Betty Cawley.
John was born in Edmonton to Herbert and Mary Mason. He graduated from the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine in 1952 and attained his radiology specialty in 1959. He was also a RCAF pilot officer in the 418 Squadron (Reserve).
He began his medical practice as a partner with Mallet, Mallet and Mason in 1960. It grew to what is now Insight Medical Imaging. John was Chief of Radiology at the Misericordia Hospital, retiring in 1994. He was a leader in his field and was instrumental in bringing the first MRI machine and other specialized imaging equipment to the hospital
John was dedicated to his family. He gave his time and insight whenever needed with commitment and passion. John enjoyed the holidays in Maui with family and friends. The many happy times shared at the Wizard Lake cottage and farm were also high on his list. He also enjoyed nothing more than hunting with his pointers and boys.
Music was an important part of John’s life. John could play any song on the piano after listening to it once. It was a gift he loved to share with many by playing whenever asked. He was often the life of a party.
The family would like to thank Myra Colanggo and Doris Robles for their loving care and devotion to John for the last number of years.
A celebration of John’s life will be held at St. George Anglican Church, 11737 87 Avenue on Saturday, November 15, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club, 9450 Groat Road.
