Jeanne Ardelle Johnston (nee Smeltzer)

Jeanne Johnston (nee Smeltzer) was born in Drumheller, AB, and was raised in Edmonton. She attended Westglen High School and the University of Alberta, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Bacteriology in 1946. She worked as a Laboratory Technologist at the TB Sanatorium in Ste. Agathe, QC prior to her marriage in 1950 to Dr. Robert James Johnston, and then worked at the University of Chicago while he did his surgical residency there.
Jeanne was an excellent skier, teaching at the Edmonton Ski Club in the 1960’s. During this time, Jeanne was also involved with the Family Service Association’s Second Look program which enabled women to re-enter the work force after raising their children.
She loved the outdoors and the family cottage in Jasper, where she hiked, fished, golfed and skied with her family and friends. She also loved to travel with friends and family.
Jeanne is predeceased by her loving husband Robert, parents Gordon and Bessie (Stickney) Smeltzer, brother Keith and sister Helen. She is survived by daughters Marjorie (Peter) and Laurie (Daniel), and son Brian (Penelope), grandchildren Catherine (Glenn), Laura (Nathaniel), Lindsay (Robert) and Colin, and five great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend thanks to the staff of Laurier House Lynnwood for their care and compassion.
A Celebration of Life for Jeanne and Robert will be held at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club on Saturday, March 18 from 1:30 – 4:00 pm.
