It’s with both love and sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our
Mom, Janet Joan Broste on February 13, 2020 in Grey Nuns Hospital.
Janet was born on August 5, 1935 in Smoky Lake, Alberta to Pauline Shevolup.
She spent her childhood years forming a special relationship with her
grandparents, Tihon and Wasylena Shevolup in the Smoky Lake area. She
shared several fond stories of spending summers on their farm and playing in
In June 1954, she married Peter Scott in Calgary. They moved to Victoria, BC
which she called home for many years. In January 1967 she married John
During her time in Victoria, our Mom was a hairdresser, then ran the Officers’
Club at Dockyard. She bought a small coffee shop on Bay Street and named it
Jan’s Place. It was known for great daily specials and was packed full every
lunch hour. Finally, she worked for Great Canadian Casino before she retired.
She eventually moved to Edmonton where she could be closer to all her family.
It’s there that she continued to build new friendships and have new experiences.
Our Mom was adventurous. While in Victoria, she was an accomplished Masters
Bowler and held a city 5-pin record. She had several other interests including
travel, playing Bingo, knitting, baking, playing cards and games. Most especially,
she was a formidable Scrabble opponent, right to the end. She loved outings
and treasured her time with her swimming group. She was thrilled with white
water rafting and ‘all exclusives’! She liked to help others and was generous with
her time, her gifts and her love. Mom was known by all for her perfect pastry, her
perogies and borscht and her amazing sausage rolls.
The most important thing to our Mom was her family. She loved spending time
with everyone and left behind a legacy that she was proud of, most especially
her great grandchildren.
Mom leaves behind four children; Donald (Nancy), Julie (Shawn), Laurel (Dan)
and Janice. As a proud Granny she leaves behind 11 grandchildren; Peter
(Deanna), Brett (Bridgit), Jennifer (Brian), Justin (Jenni-Mai), Katelynne
(Cortney), Eric, Robyn (Tyler), Michael, Megan, Jonathan and Cole. As a Great
Granny, her most special legacy; her seven great grandchildren; Isaac, Tate,
Fraser, Peter, Annette, Ella and Michelle. She was excited about, and looking
forward to, the arrival of her eighth.
A service to celebrate the life of our Mom, Janet, will be held at Gospel Centre at
9445 – 153 St. Edmonton on Saturday, March 7 at 2:00 p.m. Refreshments to
