It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our father James Coupland Smith “Jim” on August 27, 2014 at the age of 87.
Jim is survived by his half-brother Andrew Wilder of London, England, and sadly missed by six children: Janice Christensen of Edmonton, Wayne (Marcia) Smith of Squamish, B.C., Hugh Smith, James (Gerry) Smith of Quesnel, B.C., Anthony Smith of Edmonton, Nancy (Rob) McCullough of Powell River, B.C.; grandchildren: Nancy (Trevor), Courtney (Peter), Rosie (Josh), Curtis, Molly, Meagan, Annie, Dylan, Darion; and great-grandchildren: Cheyenne, Timothy, Dezmond, Nicholas, Kajya, and Christian.
Jim was an oilfield worker in the 50s-60s then upgraded his education to become a social worker for the Government of Alberta for 20 years. He retired in 1993, and in his retirement, he taught English as a second language for Project Adult Literacy Society (PALS). Jim helped numerous Vietnamese immigrants to Canada learn English in preparation for becoming Canadian citizens.
Jim was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Rose Smith (Ross) in November 2001.
Cremation has taken place.
A Celebration of Life will take place Friday, September 5, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 10031-109 Street. Lunch will follow at Project Adult Literacy Society, #41 – 9912-106 Street.
