Margaret (Irene) Benedict passed away peacefully on August 17, 2013 at the age of 94 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Wilfred and Margaret Shier, her husband, Russell, and her daughter Maureen Orban. Irene will be lovingly remembered by her son, Glen (Chitra) Benedict and their children, Manish, Priya and Meenuka Singh and her grandchildren, Michael and Kory Orban.
Irene was born and raised on a farm ten miles south of Chinook, Alberta. She received a teaching certificate from Calgary Normal School and Bachelors of Commerce and Education and Masters of Education from the University of Alberta. Irene taught in Alberta schools for 35 years, 29 of which were as a teacher and counselor at Victoria Composite High School in Edmonton. At the same time, due to the early passing of her husband, she raised her two children as a single parent. She was a dedicated and devoted parent. She will be greatly missed.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Canterbury Lane and the nurses and doctors on 7 east at the Misericordia Hospital for the excellent care that was provided to Irene.
At Irene’s request, cremation has taken place and a private family service was held.
