Liam J. Hoekstra, beloved son of Deborah Hoekstra and cherished nephew of R-W Hoekstra died suddenly due to a catastrophic medical incident in mid-November 2021.
Liam was pre-deceased by his Oma (Anneke) who called him a “Miracle from God” and by his Opa (John) his anchor and the calm in the storm.
Liam leaves behind family and friends all around the globe. In addition to his mother and uncle, Liam was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by those who through the years became family: His Junior Mama Bears: Bobbi and Bailey; Darrel, his best friend and the man who became known as Papa Bear; and their families.
His support staff and caregivers Lorna, Royce and Alice took on the responsibility of caring for Liam with dedication and love. Liam’s personality was such that he touched many people’s hearts. He was rarely “just a job”. Liam drew people in with his infectious laugh, his bright smile and his delight in being in your presence. He loved company!
Liam enjoyed music! Celtic Thunder and Drums of any kind; Mozart and Abba; Fred Penner and Alison Krauss: Raffi and Beethoven; Rob de Nijs and Cher; Richard Rankin and Hugh Jackman and so so many others across genres and decades.
Liam was well travelled. His absolute favourite parts of travelling were bumpy roads, turbulent skies and gentle waves. Going any place with Liam was usually an adventure and took many weeks (if not months of planning) But it was always worth it, witnessed by the joy in his face and the friends he made along the way.
To all the doctors, nurses, medical personnel, advocates, educators, caregivers, developmental specialists, therapists: Thank you for all you did to make Liam’s life inclusive and less challenging.
Thank you to the paramedics from Strathcona County who were first on scene and recognized how truly sick Liam was; for keeping an anxious mother company until a family member arrived to share her vigil.. To the ER Staff under Dr. MacDonald and RN Tony and the ICU staff of Dr. P. Brindley, Dr. Mark and nurses Laurie, Karen and Shannon and the many others who rallied around Liam the night he died: Thank you for your diligence and your compassion.
Liam’s memorial service is scheduled for December 11th, 2021. It will be live streamed and recorded. The service will go live at 12:45 pm MST with a PowerPoint of Liam’s life accompanied by live piano music. The service itself will start at 1 pm MST.
