HILLIS, Grant Wendell

Grant Wendell Hillis was born on February 2, 1959, at the Grande Prairie Municipal Hospital. He was the third addition to family of Jack and Elsie Hillis.

Grant’s early years were spent on Hillcrest Drive, attending Hillside Elementary. In 1966, the family moved to the acreage on Wapiti Road, attending Harry Balfour School, and then graduating Grade 12 from the Composite High School.

Even though academics wasn’t first on his mind, Grant enjoyed the sports programs and the many friends he made along the way. During his high school years at GP Composite, Grant was part of the Vienna 76 choir, which toured Europe during the summer of 1976.

Grant’s first job was working in the grocery department of the GP Co-Op. After high school graduation, Grant’s occupations were mainly focused on the trucking industry, with a few years apprenticing as a heavy-duty mechanic at Prairie Truck & Trailer. Through his jobs, he met some great lifelong friends and had so many memories that he loved to share (when you got him talking). He ended his working career after 30+ years with Withers Trucking. During his retirement, he worked briefly for Kinetic Transport.

Grant loved sports. As a kid and young adult, he was involved in hockey, baseball, and curling. As he got older, golf became his preferred sport. It was always a great day when he could be golfing.

Life took Grant down a path riddled with health issues causing him to have great mobility issues. He battled back to regain his mobility and had been very successful and was looking forward to being with his friends once again. Unfortunately, complications due to lung cancer took his life on March 8, 2022, at the age of 63 years old. Grant will be forever missed.

Grant was predeceased by his parents, John & Elsie Hillis, grandparents, Harold & Olive Hillis, Ted & Sigrid Torgerson, and several beloved aunts and uncles and cousins.

Left to grieve his loss are brothers; Warren (Audrey) Hillis, Cameron (Monica) Hillis and sisters, Sandra and Tracey, nieces and nephews, Joel (Carlye), Lesley (Tim), Riley (Sheri), Jeremy (Kat), Tara, Courtney (Dan), Evan (Cindy), Braden, Hailey, Joshua (Dakotha), Elyssa and several great nieces and nephews. Also left to miss Grant are uncles and aunts; Torger Torgerson, Ken (Mabel) Torgerson, and Carolyn (Dan) Robinson, many cousins, and friends.

“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.”

Come join the family to “celebrate Grant” on Saturday, June 18, 2022, 12:30 pm at the GP Curling Club. Donations in Grant’s memory can be made to KidSport-GP Chapter www.kidsportcanada.ca
