June 26, 1931 – January 24, 2019
Henry Tischer passed away in Edmonton on January 24, 2019 after a short illness. Henry was born on the family farm near Leduc, Alberta to Emil and Christine Tischer. The sixth of nine children, he grew up on the farm, and later worked in Edmonton as a baker, and then at Beaver Lumber. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force in Canada and Germany. While in Germany, he married Christel Donner in 1954; their son Gregory was born in 1955. After leaving the Air Force, he was employed with Western Varieties and later worked with the Royal Canadian Legion in Edmonton. Henry was a good cook (a family trait!), and enjoyed hosting his annual family BBQ at his home in Edmonton during the 1970s and -80s.
Henry is survived by his son, Gregory (Betty); his granddaughter, Cynthia; his brothers Albert (Linda) and Edmund (Norma) Tischer; his sisters Inga Gingras and Helga Newman; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Christine and Emil Tischer (died 1965 and 1985) and his siblings Eleanor Sullivan (1996), Ruby Tischer (2009), Hannah Grunwald (2012), and Helmut Tischer (2016).
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 2 at 11:00 a.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Strathcona Branch #150, 9020 – 51 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta. There will be a viewing beginning at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service.
