Karl Andrew Hedlin, the oldest son of Robert and Alice Hedlin, was born on March 10, 1952, in Winnipeg. On November 15, 2022, in Edmonton, he was called home to be with the Lord.
Karl grew up in Winnipeg. He especially enjoyed playing basketball in high school, where he won the Carl Ridd award for basketball and academic excellence. Later he played basketball for the University of Manitoba Junior Bisons. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with a B.S.A. in the Faculty of Agriculture in 1976. In the fall of 1977, he chose to go to Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute in Camrose, Alberta. He spent two winters there, and then went on to study at the Lutheran seminary in Saskatoon. After completing his studies in 1983, he accepted a call to serve congregations at Sexsmith, Woking and Northmark in the Peace River area. In 1987, he accepted a call to serve in Edberg and New Norway. He also served in Tilley and Rolling Hills, and later Leduc and Thorsby, Alberto. He also worked in a group home in Edmonton.
For many years Karl struggled with Parkinson’s Disease, and that, together with other health conditions, eventually took his life. Karl was devoted to his church community at Christ the King Anglican Church Edmonton, and greatly valued the warm love and friendship he experienced from the members there.
He was predeceased by his mother Alice in 1974 and by his father Robert in 2004. He leaves to mourn his brother Hugh (Jody), his nephews Jonathan (Jen) Jandavs-Hedlin, and Andrew (Jolene), and niece Laura (Simon) Wunderli, his sister Nancy (Dave) Waldie and his stepmother Irene.
The funeral will be on Friday, November 25, 2022, at 2 pm at Hope City Church on the corner of 23rd Ave and 66 St Edmonton. Enter by entrance #2 on the west side of the building. The service will be in the fireside room, followed by a light lunch. In lieu of flowers you may make a donation to The Parkinson Association of Alberta.
