HAUKENFRERS, Helga Ruth

-

Life will never be the same. It is with sadness that we announce that Helga Ruth Haukenfers went home to meet her Lord and Saviour on the afternoon of August 23, 2020 at the age of 88. As we say goodbye to our mother, our Oma, Great-Oma, sister, sister-in-law, and aunt, the realization hits us as to how huge a loss this is in our lives.

Helga was born in Dortmund, Germany to Karl and Maria Rabe on Friday, May 13, 1932. The middle child of five she had an older sister and brother and two younger brothers. She was the only one that immigrated to Canada, and all her life she missed her family tremendously.

Upon her baptism in 1950, Helga claimed as her life’s verse “For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” (1 John 5:4). She was an overcomer in life. Her faith in Jesus, her Saviour and Lord, never wavered as she trusted Him to guide her through the many storms and trials of life.

In May 1951, she followed her fiancé, Herman Haukenfrers, to Alberta, where they were married January 30, 1952. After moving to Edmonton, they became active members of Central Baptist Church, although from 1960-1969 they were founding members of Salem Baptist Church.

Family was the most important aspect of Helga’s life. Since her family remained in Germany, she focused her devotion on her in-laws. They were her dearest friends and her love for them, especially her mother-in-law, was unlimited.

Helga poured her heart and soul into being a mother, raising her daughter, Erica, and son, Rolf, to strive for the best. Her home welcomed many guests, and no one ever left hungry. An amazing hostess, her menus were always diverse, and her tables set with perfection, especially at Kaffee and Kuchen time.

Helga was predeceased by her Herman, her husband of 62 years, her parents, her parents-in- law, her sister Inge, her brothers Karl-Heinz and Guenther, numerous in-laws, several nieces and nephews and countless friends.

Memories of Helga will be cherished by her children Erica Fath and Rolf Haukenfrers; her grandchildren Rebecca (James) Tupper, Timothy Fath, Wyanita (Matt) Seinen, Heather Fath; her great-granddaughters Taylor Seinen, Inara Fath; her step great-grandchildren Tyson Seinen, Katelynn Seinen; her brother Horst Rabe; her beloved in laws Werner, Walter and Erika, Willi and Ruth, Manfred and Bev, and Helga; as well as several cousins, numerous nieces and nephews and countless friends.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Dr Doug McCarty for his loving care the past few years and Dr Mair the last few months. Thanks also to the staff of units 17, 18 and 19 at the Sturgeon Hospital. A special thank you to the entire staff at both Rivers Ridge where she enjoyed living for 16 months and Citadel Care Center, both in St Albert, who lovingly cared for her in her last 3 months. As a family, we saw the compassionate care you always gave Helga. She sensed your gentleness and often told us that she couldn’t have been in a safer place.

Any memorial donation you wish to make in Helga’s honor may be made to the Gideons.

A Celebration of Helga’s life is planned for Thursday, September 10, 2020 at 2 p.m. Covid requires this be “by invitation only” event for family and close friends. Should you wish an invitation, please contact the family.
