The family of Hans Jessen announce with great sadness that Hans passed away on Saturday, June 28. Left to mourn are his wife of nearly 54 years, Rosa (Rosel) Jessen; his son, Dirk Jessen; his daughter, Anke Eastwood (Paul); his four grandchildren, Erika and Tilman Jessen and Sarah and Rebecca Eastwood, and relatives in Germany, as well as friends here in Canada. Hans was predeceased by his parents, Hans Thomas and Marie Christine, as well as all six of his siblings, three brothers and three sisters.
Hans was born in Schleswig Holstein, north Germany, on August 7, 1928.
There, in 1960, he met and married Rosel, who was a public healthcare nurse at the time. In October of that year they came by boat to Montreal and from there by train to Tofield, Alberta. It was in the Tofield area that they lived, worked, raised a family and then retired. Late last year, because of Rosel’s increasing healthcare needs, Hans moved into Edmonton, the first time he had ever lived in a city.
Hans will be remembered for his hard work, his generosity and willingness to help people, his sense of humour, his love of farming and nature, and for the many trees he planted.
The family would like to thank the many people who gifted Hans with numerous acts of kindness over the past months. In particular, we would like to recognize the staff at Shepherd’s Care, Grey Nun’s Units 42 & 43, and Norwood Hospice.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 4 at Tofield United Church (4832 – 53 Ave.) at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Adam Hall presiding. Hans’ urn will be interred at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Tofield United Church or Bissell Centre.
