With sadness and much love, we announce that Alma Hamilton of Devon, AB (formerly of Wapella, SK) passed away peacefully at home, with her family by her side, on January 23, 2018 at the age of 86, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Alma will be dearly missed and always remembered by her family and friends. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, Alma is survived by her husband of 63 years, Russell; her three children Rayona Hamilton, Lyle (Camie) Hamilton, Donna (Mike) Palmer; four grandchildren Keaton Hamilton, Brealyn Hamilton, Remick Palmer and Rhys Palmer; brothers Willie (Nora), Ed (Audrey), Bruno, Art (Dianne), Armin (Camille); sisters Gertie, Rita (Terry) and Hertha; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Emily and Adolfe Wushke, sister Sylvia and brothers Eric and Albert.
Raised on a farm in rural Saskatchewan, and being the oldest daughter in a family of 12 children, Alma took on many responsibilities from a young age, helping to raise her younger siblings which prepared her for a life long journey of caring for and nurturing her own family. She was a devoted wife and mother, always eager and willing to try new things. A superb cook and avid gardener, Alma enjoyed travelling, playing bridge, curling, golfing, cross country skiing, walking on Devon’s natural trails, camping and fishing, searching for and picking wild strawberries, blueberries and saskatoons for canning and pies. Always elegant and a consummate hostess, she enjoyed entertaining and meeting new people. Volunteering in the Devon United Church Thrift Shop and Devon Centennial Garden were equally important to her. One of her greatest pleasures in life was taking care of her grandchildren, spending many hours making forts, baking cookies and taking them on camping trips with Grandpa.
A private family gathering will be held. A Celebration of Life will take place in the spring, Alma’s favourite time of year.
The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Eva Patocka, the staff of Devon General Hospital, AHS HomeCare and the nursing staff from Nurse Next Door for their exceptional care and assistance.
Donations may be made in Alma’s name to Devon United Church, 2 St. Clair Street, Devon, AB T9G 1J3, or online at www.devonunitedchurch.ca.
