GRATTON, Merie Jeanne

It is with sadness that the family of Merie (Jeanne) Paquette Gratton announce her passing on May 19, 2022, at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta.

Merie was born on March 10, 1930, on the Paquette family farm in Calahoo, Alberta. The fifth of thirteen children born to Delia and Albert Paquette, Merie learned early the value of hard work. She raised eight children on her own and bravely bore the loss of daughter, Doris, at age 5. Despite many hardships, Merie always took comfort in her Catholic faith. She enjoyed simple pleasures: dancing, a good joke, caring for her grandchildren. Always independent, she was still managing her apartment building, collecting rent and shoveling snow into her 80s.

Merie is predeceased by siblings Lucienne, Theresa, Adelard, Annette, Yvonne, Cecile, Omer and Fernand. She is fondly remembered by siblings (Armand, Leo, Pauline, Alice), children (Albert, Maurice, Omer, Doreen, Connie, Darcy, Duane) and her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Albert Catholic Church on Thursday, May 26, 2022, at 2 pm. The service will be followed by interment at the St. Albert Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, it is Merie’s wish that any memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to Bissell Centre of Edmonton (

She was a mother not only to her own children , but also to her grand children as well. I feel blessed to have had her as a grandmother as she played a big role in my life growing up. I’m thankful for all she taught me including manners and respect and introduced me to the catholic faith, which now is a big part of my life. She will be greatly missed.
